About this book
This book is divided into three strands, 'Material lives' develops an understanding of how social and material lives are related and discusses issues of the sustainability of contempory consumer society. It examines whether our material lives are becoming more or less sustainable, how we live with risk and uncertainty and how global problems such as climate change can be addressed. 'Connected lives' looks at how people's identities are made and considers some of the connections and disconnections between people. It explores questions of migration and identity, the contested nature of national identity and changes of identity during the lifecycle. 'Ordered lives' examines questions of social order and asks how are societies ordered and governed. It looks at how risks and inequalities are governed, the role of states in governing, and questions of political legitimacy and transnational and international relations among states.
