Best Time to Sell Textbooks in the UK (and Why Before Christmas Works)

Textbooks sell when students are looking for them: September, January and the run-up to each. Here is when to list in the UK, how to handle the Christmas break, and what to do with books you will not need for semester 2.

The right time to sell a textbook is just before someone needs it. For UK university books that means two main windows: the run-up to September and the run-up to semester 2 in January. On UniBookTrade, September is the busiest time of year for buyers and January is the next peak.

Most students only think about selling at the end of the year, in May or June. That works too, but it is also when the most books are listed at once, so a book you have finished in December can be worth listing now.

Exact dates vary by university. For example, the University of Southampton's student Christmas vacation runs from 13 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, while the University of Edinburgh's winter vacation runs from 22 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. Check your own term dates.

Why selling before Christmas works

  • Students starting your old module in January need the same books. Many universities start semester 2 in January, so there is a fresh set of buyers each year.
  • Fewer sellers compete with you. Most students wait until the summer to sell.
  • Your listing is already live when buyers search. Students often look for books before term starts, so listing in December means you are there when they look.
  • You travel lighter. Books you sell don't need to go home and back.

Which books to sell now, and which to keep

Sell now:

  • Core texts for modules you have finished and won't revisit.
  • Books for optional modules you won't take again.
  • Duplicate copies, or an older edition you replaced.

Keep for now:

  • Books for modules that continue into semester 2.
  • Anything you need for summer exams, including foundations for later modules.
  • Books for modules you might need to resit. See our university resits guide if that applies to you.

Handling the Christmas break

If a book sells while you are away, you still need to post it. On UniBookTrade you drop a sold book off within 5 days, so plan ahead:

  1. Take listed books home with you. Then you can post them from a local drop-off point if they sell.
  2. Or pause the listings before you travel. Paused listings leave search until you reactivate them, and you can switch them back on from your listings page when you return.
  3. Don't list books you have left in a locked room on campus. If you can't post them within 5 days, wait until you are back.

How to get your book seen in January

  • List with the exact ISBN. Buyers search by ISBN to match their reading list, and the book's details fill in for you.
  • Take clear photos. Show the cover, the spine and any highlighting or damage.
  • Price realistically. We suggest a price to help you choose, and you set the final one. Compare copies of the same edition.
  • Check what students want. The most wanted books list shows titles people are searching for.

Listing on UniBookTrade is free, and you keep 100% of the price you set. When it sells, we text you and you post it with a prepaid label.

Not worth selling?

If a book is several editions out of date or too damaged to sell, our guide to what to do with old university textbooks covers donating and recycling, and our donation directory lists national and campus options.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to sell textbooks in the UK?

Just before students start looking for them. That means listing in August for September, and in December or early January for semester 2. Books listed before the rush are visible when buyers start searching.

Should I sell my textbooks before Christmas?

If you have finished with a book and will not need it for semester 2 or summer exams, yes. Students starting those modules in January will be looking for it. If you list, make sure you can post it if it sells while you are home.

What if my book sells while I am away for Christmas?

On UniBookTrade you drop a sold book off within 5 days, so either take your listed books home with you or pause the listings before you travel and reactivate them when you are back.

Is it better to sell textbooks at the end of the year?

The end of the year is when most students sell, so there is more competition from other sellers. Books you finish in December can sell sooner, to students starting the module in January.
