Is an older edition of the Oxford Handbook okay for finals?
For core content, usually yes - buying an edition-old Oxford Handbook is an institutionalised part of medical school culture, and the canon only updates every three to seven years. The caveat is guidelines and drug doses, which do change: use current guidance and a formulary for prescribing, and treat the books as your core-science and wards layer.
Did the UKMLA change which books I need?
No. The UKMLA's content map was built from existing GMC outcomes, so the established finals canon still covers it. Some UKMLA-branded revision titles have appeared alongside, but they supplement rather than replace the standard texts.
Can I sell my medical textbooks after finals?
Yes - and demand is constant: around 10,000 UK students graduate each year, over 20,000 candidates sit PLAB 1 annually, and the slow edition cycle means your current-edition books stay sellable for years rather than months. Listing on UniBookTrade is free.
What about MRCP and MRCS books?
Postgraduate prep has largely moved to online question banks, but the reference books still trade actively - PasTest's Essential Revision Notes for MRCP is long out of print and effectively a used-market item, and Best of Five question books cost £25-£45 new. Edition currency matters least for pathophysiology and most for guideline-driven topics.
