Introduction

York packs two thousand years of history into a city you can walk across in half an hour. The Romans founded it as Eboracum, the Vikings called it Jorvik, and you'll spend your degree walking past the Minster and along medieval walls on the way to the pub.

The city has two universities: the University of York, a campus university in Heslington and a member of the Russell Group, and York St John University, right in the city centre next to the Minster.

Academic life

University of York

York is a research-intensive university with strengths across the sciences, social sciences and humanities. Its big structural quirk is the college system: every student belongs to one of 11 colleges (Alcuin, Anne Lister, Constantine, David Kato, Derwent, Goodricke, Halifax, James, Langwith, Vanbrugh and Wentworth Graduate College), whether you live on campus or not (University of York). Colleges run their own sports teams, events and common rooms, so they're the easiest way to find your people in first year.

Look out for second- and third-year volunteers (STYCs and STYMs) who support new students through their first year in each college.

York St John University

York St John sits in the city centre and is known for subjects such as education, sport, the creative arts and health. If you'd rather step out of your front door into the city than onto a campus, it's worth a look.

Accommodation

University of York halls

York's 2026/27 undergraduate rooms include bills, Wi-Fi, contents insurance and 24-hour security, and about half of campus rooms are en-suite (University of York). Catered rooms cost roughly £40 a week more than self-catered.

On a 40-week let, the cheapest room works out at £5,960 for the year. When you apply, at least three of your seven choices must be shared-bathroom rooms, so don't set your heart on en-suite.

Private housing

After first year most students move into shared houses. Popular areas include:

• Heslington: right next to campus, so convenient and in demand.
• Fulford: between campus and the city centre, with good walking and cycling routes.
• Tang Hall and Osbaldwick: popular, often cheaper, on bus routes to campus.
• City centre: the most atmospheric option, usually the priciest.

Things to do

Free and cheap

• Walk the city walls. Long stretches of York's medieval walls are open to walk, free, with great views of the Minster.
• The Shambles. York's famous medieval street is often said to have inspired Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. It's never been confirmed, but it's worth a wander, ideally early before the crowds.
• York Minster. A vast Gothic cathedral and the city's landmark. Check the Minster's website for visiting prices and service times.
• Parks and the river: Rowntree Park and the riverside paths along the Ouse are great for a sunny day, and Museum Gardens is right in the centre.

Culture

• York Art Gallery: student and 17–24 tickets are £8.10 (adults £9), covering the collection and exhibitions (York Art Gallery).
• City Screen Picturehouse: independent and mainstream films on the river.
• York Theatre Royal: drama, comedy and the annual pantomime; check for student and young-person deals.

Nights out

York's nightlife is smaller and more pub-heavy than Leeds or Manchester, with plenty of historic pubs, cocktail bars and a handful of clubs in the centre. For live music, The Fulford Arms is a 150-capacity grassroots venue with local and touring acts. Your college and YUSU (the University of York's students' union) run socials and club nights all year; venues change often, so check what's on during freshers' week.

Getting around

• Walking and cycling: York is compact and mostly flat, with good cycle routes between campus, Fulford and the centre. A bike is the single best purchase you'll make.
• Buses: First York runs University of York routes and sells discounted student tickets; check the First York student page for current prices before buying singles all term.
• Trains: York station is on the East Coast Main Line with direct trains to London, Edinburgh and beyond, plus direct trains to Leeds and Manchester. A 16-25 Railcard costs £35 a year and takes a third off.

Money

Ways to stretch your loan:

• Cook in your flat: college kitchens are designed for it, and catered meals don't cover everything.

Careers

York's economy leans on tourism, hospitality, retail, the public sector and a growing tech and bioscience scene. Big local names include Nestlé, which makes KitKat in York, insurer Aviva, and the NHS. Both universities run careers services with CV help, fairs and placement support. Start using them in first year, not final year.
