Oxygen is vital to most forms of life, primarily because it is required for oxidative phosphorylation to produce ATP. The control of oxygen delivery is brought about by a convergence of oxygen-sensing mechanisms. Current research is beginning to shed light on the mechanisms by which hypoxia can alter the expression and activity of specific proteins which are essential to the functioning of certain cell types.
