Used SQE books can be an option for reducing preparation costs, but a low price does not establish that a set covers the law and assessment specification for your sitting. Start with the sitting and required material, then compare editions.
Start with the SRA, then the publisher
Check the current SRA SQE1 assessment specification and assessment dates. The SRA specifies a law cut-off for each assessment window. Check that date directly rather than relying on a seller's statement that the books are “current”.
Next, find the publisher's page for the precise edition. Look for updates, corrections, coverage statements and whether materials for a different sitting can be supplemented. UBT does not certify that an older book is sufficient for an exam.
Use this checklist for a single book or set
| Check | What to record |
|---|---|
| Assessment | SQE1 or SQE2; FLK1 or FLK2 where relevant |
| Sitting | Your intended assessment window |
| Edition | Printed edition and publication year |
| ISBN | Each required volume, not only the box or set |
| Coverage | Subjects included and omitted |
| Updates | Publisher corrections and updates for that edition |
| Access | Any online questions or licence you must buy separately |
| Condition | Annotations, missing pages and completed exercises |

“Complete set” needs a list
Compare the contents with your provider's requirements. A collection labelled “SQE books” might include only part of FLK1 or FLK2, or mix editions. Ask for photographs of the covers and copyright pages, plus an explicit list of volumes. Include the cost of missing titles when comparing totals.
Do not assume an online question bank transfers with physical books. Verify the provider's current licence terms. A used book may still be worth buying without a code, but only after accounting for access you need separately.
Price the edition, not the original purchase
Compare current offers for the same ISBN and condition. Older printings, incomplete sets and annotations can change the value. A seller's original course cost is not a comparable price for a used physical volume.
If the edition you need is unavailable, request a stock alert rather than choosing another edition solely because it is in stock. See the ISBN checklist for format and component checks.
After your exam
Describe your edition and included volumes accurately. Passing with a book does not prove that it is suitable for a later sitting. Our guide to selling SQE books after passing helps prepare a listing.
