What to Do With Your SQE Books After You Pass (2026/27)

Quick answer: sell them soon after your results, while your edition is recent. Subject guides keep their value best. Mention the edition year or "for 20XX exams" label, and say clearly if a mock or practice book was written for the old 180-question SQE1 format (it changes in January 2027).

The most short-lived library you'll ever own

SQE preparation is unusual: you build a serious library covering both Functioning Legal Knowledge papers, use it intensively for months, then pass an exam you'll never sit again. The whole collection becomes surplus overnight.

It isn't a cheap collection. The full Revise SQE SQE1 bundle lists at £232.90 new (£123.30 each for the FLK1 and FLK2 bundles). University of Law's SQE Manuals cost £45.99 each for the 6th edition. SQE1 covers business law and practice, dispute resolution, contract, tort, the legal system, constitutional law, legal services, property practice, wills, solicitors accounts, land law, trusts and criminal law and practice. All of that is on top of the SRA's own fees of £2,006 for SQE1 and £3,086 for SQE2 in 2026/27.

The good news: SQE books have a real second-hand market.

Why SQE books resell well

1. The buyer pool is large and growing. The SRA's 2024/25 annual report counts more than 16,200 individual candidates, up from 14,600 the year before. 7,863 candidates sat SQE1 in January 2026, against 6,782 in January 2025.
2. Editions stay usable. Publishers refresh SQE titles every year or two, and the subject content is fairly stable. Your books can stay sellable after the sitting you bought them for. Buyers should still revise from the current SRA assessment specification.
3. Nobody keeps them. SQE books aren't reference books you hold onto, so complete, lightly annotated sets come onto the market after every results day, and a new cohort is ready to buy.

What the January 2027 changes mean for your books

From the January 2027 sitting, each FLK paper has 170 questions in two sessions of 85, instead of 180. Subjects are split between the sessions. The SRA says the assessment blueprint (the share of questions per subject) hasn't changed.

What to sell, and what to say in the listing

• Revise SQE subject guides sell easily. They're cheap enough new that buyers happily take a used copy, and selling them individually lets buyers fill gaps.
• University of Law manuals are usually the most valuable items. A recent set in good condition is a big saving for a self-funded candidate.
• Practice-question books age fastest. Recent editions sell best, and the format change makes the edition year more important.
• Be accurate about edition and annotations. SQE candidates are careful buyers, and an honest listing sells.

When to sell

List soon after your results, while your edition is newest. SQE1 runs in January and July, so candidates build their libraries in the months before each sitting. SQE2 runs in January, April and July 2027.

If you're buying

Buying second-hand cuts your book costs a lot. Used copies on UniBookTrade are typically 40–60% below RRP. For stable FLK content, an edition or so old is broadly fine, with two cautions. Check tax-related FLK2 topics (SDLT rates, inheritance tax) against current figures, and work from the current SRA specification rather than any book's contents page.
