A familiar title and cover are not enough to identify the book your course requires. Compare the reading-list entry with the physical copy before paying. The International ISBN Agency explains that revised editions and different formats receive different ISBNs, while an unchanged reprint can keep the same ISBN.

Copy the ISBN exactly, including a final X on older ISBN-10 books. The ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 printed together can identify the same publication; do not treat them as two editions simply because they have different lengths.

Where to find the number

Look beside the back-cover barcode and on the copyright page near the front. A sticker can obscure the original barcode, so check inside if the numbers disagree. For a multi-volume set, identify whether a number refers to the whole set or one volume. Record each book you actually need.

The Reading List Checker lets you check several ISBNs on UBT. A matching catalogue entry does not prove that a seller has included every extra component: read the listing and look at the photographs.

When an older edition might work

Ask your tutor or course provider whether a different edition is acceptable. Chapter order, exercises and page references can change even when the core topic is similar. For ACCA or SQE, also check the paper and exam sitting. For medical books, follow the course's current requirements rather than treating an old text as current clinical guidance.

Access codes and annotations

Do not assume a used book includes reusable online access. Check the publisher's terms for the platform you need. Include any separate licence in the total price before comparing offers.

Ask for clear photographs of highlighting, damaged pages or incomplete workbooks. Sellers should describe defects rather than relying on a general condition label. Avoid a copy if essential pages are missing.

Before checkout

Confirm the ISBN, format, included components, condition and delivery total. If the edition is unavailable, request a stock alert and compare other sellers. Our website comparison helps distinguish marketplaces from buyback services and booksellers.

Check your reading list or find an exact edition. Selling instead? Photograph the ISBN and edition statement so the next student can make the same checks.
